Day 14 to Grödner Joch

We decided to merge the next 3 stages into 2, so it was a bit longer hike today to the skiing hub “Grödner Joch” (instead of staying at the “Puez Hütte”, which is no good anyway – don’t plan to stay there). It was a lot of climbing today up on the “Roa-Scharte” and the “Nives-Scharte” (2.715m) over many scree fields (no more snow, hey we are in Italy), but the view was fantastic! It reminded me of the Grand Canyon but just in monochrome colours. When standing in the wind on top it got pretty cold, only few degree over 0, thanks Pia for giving me your warm down jacket. Once going down to the Grödner Joch it started to rain, soon followed by hail – though just little ones big as half a pea and only for 20 min. We were a bit afraid that a thunderstorm would come – no good when being at the peak – but lucky us the sun was out soon after. After a loooong and tough hiking day we finally made it to the “Rifugio Frara” at the modern mini-village Grödner Joch, had Pasta for dinner and fall asleep right after, dreaming of the peak tomorrow: the “Piz Boe” at 3.152 m.

Highlight of the day

The break-taking view of the “Sella Massiv” where you have a 360 degree view of rocky mountains only!

  • 18 km
  • 9 hr 30 min (incl 45 min break)
  • 840 m up / 960 m down
  • Highest point: 2.746 m (Nivesscharte)
  • Lowest point: 2.117 m (Grödner Joch)
